Berlin! Mauerpark Weaving Action Tomorrow!

Tomorrow wednesday I will bring the Loom On Wheels Mark 2 to my new neighborhood park, Mauerpark in Prenzlauerberg, Berlin! I’ll be there weaving from gegen 2-5 in the nachmittag, so if you are in the neighborhood come and see the new piece in progress! Also this sunday probably I will keep you posted.

Busy Weeks!

Well I’ve been moving flats this week, to start, just for the Sommer while my landlord Kota is in town.
Here is a picture of my moving apparatus, until friends with vans helped me move the rest of it.

This load actually fell apart en route and I had to be rescued on Berlin city streets with all my stuff! Thanks again, Cecilia.

Once the moving operation was going smoothly I took the Deutsche Bahn up to Flensborg again, to the Uni where we did a great group weaving project, making rag rug out of all our scraps, using these quite nice standing looms out in the sun on the large lawn on campus. There was also a Kindertag event one day so the kids got to see the weaving happen too, and the the class discussed possible outcomes for their textile product (Through majority vote they decided to offer it to a local orphanage and ask what for they would like it to be most–my hope is the ‘huggable sculpture’ wins but I have no influence).

Then there was this DMY event a design expo where I taught some people to weave and met Mei Lu, to coolest Aboriginal Taiwanese weaver who exchanged looms and weavings and heart with me for two days! Haven’t uploaded any pictures of that yet but I am sure these digi people who were doing the exhibit I was in will be posting stuff real soon on this one: http://www.od10beta.info/

Friday night after a day at the expo I went to this cool squatty art space in Prenzlauerberg (my new neighborhood for the next 6 weeks) where they had a group art show and music, performance and drinking and dancing!

Now I am taking the day off to blog, and think, and weave, and get future primitive.

Haven’t been big on the blog scene, lately, though I’m always happy to be blogged about by other bloggers while I am on blog hiatus, which happened a couple times.
This weekend I head to Aachen, Germany, where the group show “fragments of machines” curated by Will bradley has traveled from IMO in Denmark to the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein and will be opening Saturday night! Aacheners, come out!
Next weekend, to continue my explorations of the outer regions of Germany I will be traveling north to Flensburg again, to the Universität Flensburg where I will work with Prof Schütz and Bente and the textile students to make some really profound woven situational art!
Right now I am weaving scraps to show the students for inspiration, and also because I am moving, and can’t bring a bag of yarn and cloth scraps into a new house.
More projects upcoming, and more detailed documentation and fun, so keep me in your feeds guys I’m working hard for ya!

Well I have been working on all of these off-line projects lately, but I thought I’d take a minute to catch up since I guess my Laser Loom business is going into high gear now with a shop on the Maker’s Market website… actionweaver.makersmarket.com where I’ll also be blogging and putting some content, since I can’t expect everyone to follow every loose thread I lay around the interweb… flickr, youtube, facebook and now this curated marketplace by Make magazine (you may remember my cover picture in their sister Craft) and BoingBoing, which everyone loves. The looms now sell for $50 us, plus 10 for shipping from Berlin. with lasercutting I make a $20 per loom, which I think is fair. This way I only have to sell 4,000 looms to get rid of my crushing grad school debt burden, and spread the joy of weaving to 4,000 more people! Now only 3,999. Next?

Well I have been drawing up a storm of weaving diagrams which I hope make some kind of sense to the novice, this will be augmented by videos I am shooting and posting to flickr this weekend, but here is the pdf which still has some typos, and is pretty specific to the loom that I have been building, but that will get its own instructional pamphlet soon enough and you can build one wherever you are in the world! I will probably expand this one to cover two pages but I need to get it in front of some non-experts… feedback (from experts too) encouraged!
